First up on our Interview and Guest Mix series is MKEY.
We first got introduced to MKEY last August while in Ibiza. Impressed by his DJ skill and song choice we knew we had to get him to do the first interview and guest mix.
MKEY – Shapes Guest Mix
So what got you in to DJing? How would you describe your sound?
I’ve always been in to music and loved going to different events and festivals. During my time in the army one of my best mates lived across the hall from me and had a set of decks.
He’d be blasting some epic mixes bouncing between some old school classic house tracks and rolling Tech beats and I kinda just got the buzz for it.
I came back off a deployment and went and bought my own set of decks and from there spent 90% of my free time learning how to mix and use different techniques.
It grew arms and legs from there and now here we are!
So your last release was a collaboration with Felipe Michelin called “Come On” how did that come about?
Felipe Michelin is a tech house producer from Brazil who got in contact with me about wanting to feature on my brands podcast which features on iTunes.
The mix he submitted blew me away as it was a mix full of his own productions and we built a friendship from talking back and forward.
It’s crazy how music can bring people together from 2 completely different walks of life at opposite sides of the planet.
Anyway we started giving each other feedback on music as I had just started releasing my own stuff at the same time.
We had a few ideas down together and then after a lot of back and fourth came up with “Come On” We never really had a target label for it but Kulture Records really liked it.
They were a label on my target list for this year so I brainstormed with Felipe and we decided to go ahead with it. We’ve actually just wrote another EP together.
I’ve been playing that out recently and its been getting some great feedback so stay tuned for the previews!
You also run your own night called ‘Dirty House’ what can people expect when they go to your night? What events do you have coming up?
At Dirty House I try and have a different look on each event that I do but ultimately anyone that does come will always find themselves in the same vibe.
I’ve selected a few residents who have completely different tastes in the underground house music scene so when we showcase the residents I want to try and mix up what time of the night they play.
We all bring our own unique sound to the same collective and it works a treat. We tailor it round which guest i’m bringing in but so far so good! I’ve actually just had 2 subsequent nights recently.
The first was over in Guildford with Del-30 coming down to headline and at the intimate setting of Thirty3hz Del blew the roof off the place. Most recent was a fundraiser for charity that I put on.
All proceeds went to the Last Night A DJ Saved My life Foundation who I’ve also just started working with myself, so it made sense to put on a night for a good cause.
This was a new concept brought to West London and Jack Swift and Devstar came in to work their magic. This may be the start of a new chapter in the West London Area!
We also seen your playing Wunderground stage at We Are FSTVL… how excited are you for it? Have you played We Are FSTVL festival before? Any other festivals lined up this summer or Ibiza dates??
I’ve not actually been to We Are FSTVL so I’m really looking forward to getting along and experiencing it as a raver before jumping on the Underground Rescue Stage.
This is another really cool concept from the guys over at wunderground so I’m buzzing to be involved. I’m playing the Friday at We Are FSTVL and the line up is looking proper tasty so thats one thats not to miss! I’m also heading over to Malta from the 1st – 6th May to play for Chasing the Sun Festival at 5 different locations for them.
I’ll be playing a few main events throughout the week and some afterparty’s. Other than that theres some big news about to be confirmed in Ibiza and London but I’m not quite aloud to say yet.
Having just recently moved to London I’ll also be getting the head down and working on my own music.
Thanks for recording a mix for us. What can people expect from it? Have you gone for a certain style?
I really enjoyed putting this mix together. I feel my sound changing towards the more minimal grooves at the moment but I always like to have some form of progression in anything I record. (I’d love to be able to play warm up beats all the time so I had to make sure I got a couple in!)
You’ll still find some tracks that are borderline between minimal and tech but I tried to keep you guessing! All and all its a complete rendition of the vibe I’m feeling at the moment so to anyone reading, check it out!
Are there any producers or DJ’s you would recommend to check out this year?
My go to artists at the moment are Italobros. Having been on the scene for a while now I’ve only recently just started incorporating them in my sets.
Although most is Tech House and minimal you can drop a lot of their content at any point in a set and it works. Both their original and remixes are some of the best out there at the moment.
I’ve also been in the studio a great deal with Dominic Aquila, some of the stuff he’s putting out at the moment is second to none. He’s sitting on a heap of music ready to add to his already huge collection I’d say he’s definitely one to check out.
We actually have a collaboration out this Friday on the amazing Whoyostro LTD. You can check it out here:
Lastly you have to pick three tunes….
Your go to peak time track?
Gene Farris, Hauswerks, Doorly, Hauswerks & Doorly – Put Your Back In To It
I have to admit this is in every single one of my sets and has been for a while.
I remember seeing Doorly drop this in his set at Hideout last year before it came out and I had to ask him straight away what it was. I was blown away by the reaction the crowd had and it stuck with me ever since.
Favourite classic track?
Da Hool – Meet Her at the Love Parade (Nalin and Kane Mix)
I had to take it back to the club classics for this one. So many choices between club classics and the house equivalent but this will stand out as a favourite of mine. I was definitely born in the wrong era!
A track you love but wouldn’t play in your sets?
To be honest anything from Block & Crown or David Penn will get me going in the shower but I would’t get away with dropping them in a Minimal Techno set.
