Griff Interview
Next up on our interview series is Scottish DJ and producer Griff.
DJing for nearly 10 years and now residing in Ibiza Griff has always had a passion for music. From studying sound production back in Scotland while learning to DJ, he made the choice to head to Ibiza for the summer. Since then, he has been no stop having three EP releases while securing a residency at Ministry of Sound in London at the start of year. Summer 2020 seen him return to the white isle, hosting his own Griff Graff event throughout the summer he has just recently releases his latest tune on ‘Too Many Rules’ called ‘No Space in the Summer House Scene’
Hey ma man, how’s it going? 2020 has turned out to be a mad year for obvious reasons but somehow you managed to get away to Ibiza for the summer…. Was this always the plan for this year for you and how has the summer been in Ibiza for you??
So, my plans like everyone else’s for the year went to shit. I was the new resident for Ministry of Sound and had so many gigs and events planned for the year. Covid hit and all of a sudden, I had zero income with little to no support from the government so I had to adapt and get a “real job” anyway I worked my arse of 6 days a week throughout lockdown as a key worker and saved enough to survive in Ibiza over winter. So glad I done that as I’m having a belter, still hosting my party weekly and enjoying the Ibizan sun and lifestyle whilst the UK is totally went tits up at the moment.
Youve just release your third EP via ‘Too Many Rules’. Track 1 – No Space in the Summer House Scene Track 2 – Scarlett. How would you describe the vibe of the two tracks on this release? How long have they been in the making?
The vibes of the tracks are piano inspired house music with No Space being more of a grooving track and Scarlett being the more Club orientated of the two. I made Scarlett last winter when I was living in Newcastle and No Space this summer when I was in lockdown.
In Ibiza this year we have seen you run more of your own event ‘Griffs Gaff’ at Enigma. With not really any big nights running at the super clubs this year how has your own event been? Do you think people that wouldn’t normally have attended your events did? Any funny moments from this season?
At the start of the season it was unbelievable seriously couldn’t have asked for better. As the season continued and lockdown restrictions kept happening people left the island and the numbers started to drop as expected, nonetheless I’m still doing it every week with my little crew that’s still on the island and I love it.
Anything planned out for rest of this year, Any more releases if so when? Any more Griff Gaff events?
Few releases in the pipeline and finishing off a bootleg of Marlena Shaw California Soul atm so keep an eye out for that. As for the rest of the year it’s pretty much a right off and I don’t see things getting back to “normal” anytime soon so I’m just gonna chill, produce music, get fat and make the most of what’s happening
Right two people that have never been to Ibiza are going for a week they ask you to suggest one night one club one DJ they should defo see…. what would you suggest?
Pikes best club in the world, Either Artwork or DJ Harvey!!
We are back at afters you get handed the aux you can put one tune on what would it be and why?
Jurassic Park because it’s the best piece of music ever created.
